M-Pesa for School Fees: What Parents Expect in 2026

SomaPro Team · October 11, 2026 · 1 min read

Parents will pay when the till, account reference, and balance update are clear. Ambiguity is what stalls collections.

Most Kenyan parents are ready to pay school fees digitally. What slows them down is uncertainty:

- Which till or paybill belongs to the school?
- What account reference should they use?
- When will the balance update?
- Who do they call if the SMS from Safaricom arrived but the school still shows arrears?

Schools that collect well usually do three things:

1. Publish one clear payment guide (paybill/till, reference format, office hours for disputes).
2. Post payments to the learner balance quickly—ideally the same day.
3. Show parents a live balance in a portal or statement, not only a verbal figure at the gate.

M-Pesa does not replace the bursar. It reduces cash handling risk and gives leadership a faster view of collection rate.

When you choose a school system, ask whether money lands in the school’s own M-Pesa or bank accounts, and whether the bursar can reconcile without retyping every message from the phone.
